Pinball licencing 101: how much, why – and Harry Potter
« on: December 15, 2014, 09:23:12 AM »
Hi all,

There's so much talk about pinball licencing these days that I decided to talk to Roger Sharpe (Williams' old licencing guru as I am sure you all know) to the lowdown on what they cost, how you get them and so on. He also talked about the possibility of a Harry Potter game at some point in the future.

If you're interested, the resulting article is here:

It was discussed years ago that Rowling has a negative attitude toward the hobby of pinball.  I don't think she understands it actually.

Thanks Old Pin Guy.

Re: J K Rowling, someone suggested to me that she will only allow a HP pin if it is made in Britain. Guess it would have to be a Heighway pin then...

Maybe... But she went all in with U. S. based Harry Potter world in Orlando.

harry potter....we must be desperate.

Harry Potter would be a better theme over nearly every Stern made in recent years (other than Tron :P) IMO.  Then again, I don't buy $5K NIB pins so my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it 8).

harry potter.

All joking aside, I've personally found it extremely difficult to come up with a theme relevant to TODAY that is good for pinball and has widespread appeal.  HP is substantially newer than anything Tolkien, it's not an aged rock band, a 75 year old movie, a cult movie from 20 years ago, and it is not not based on superheroes invented 50 years ago.

you'll never please the masses. even though harry potter is cute. I don't see us, the average 35+/-er buying into that theme, though.

but then again, I said I would buy no NIB stern, until they release nine inch nails. so I'm the obvious minority. :)

no theme since family guy has made me even think about it.

If they went with my recommendations, we'd have family guy, aqua teen hunger force, robot chicken, squidbillies, COPS, NiN, Marilyn Manson, Sin City, and The Devils Rejects.

and stern would be no more. ;) just like if they made a rolling stones.

UFC?

Well it is more modern than most recent themes, and fighting games have been very successful over the years, including Punch-Out, Champion Pub, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.  I had a lot of fun with my WWF Wrestlemania video game, seems a good 2 player head-to-head implementation would offer some promise in a pin.

If they went with my recommendations, we'd have family guy, aqua teen hunger force, robot chicken, squidbillies, COPS, NiN, Marilyn Manson, Sin City, and The Devils Rejects.

COPS could be an awesome theme if they kept a sense of humor and there are just endless modes... Takedown hurryup, Indecent Exposure Special, Possession Multi-ball (with new drug found add-a-ball), DUI Bonus Round, High Speed Chase Hurry-up, Drive-by Shooting Drop targets, Field Sobriety Test Bonuses, Resisting Arrest Combos, and Solicitation Wizard Mode ...
