Bard's Tale IV

Quote
27 years after the release of The Bards Tale 3, Brian Fargo has announced plans to return to the cult classic fantasy role-playing series for a sequel.

Fargo, whose studio inXile Entertainment successfully crowdfunded Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera, will again take to Kickstarter, this time to raise money to develop The Bard's Tale 4.

The last game in the fantasy role-playing series was inXile's 2004 action RPG The Bard's Tale, which was a comedy spin-off of the original, Interplay-developed games. Fargo indicated The Bard's Tale 4 would be closer to the original games than the humorous spoof, calling it "a proper sequel to the trilogy".

So I guess Kickstarter is bringing back all the old games that the big publishers think there's no market for.

Yay.

I could probably go for that. Not enough to take a chance funding the kickstarter, but if the game actually comes out, sure.

A game in this style, with some more modern polish could be good.

Grimrock was enjoyable, if slightly odd in what it chose to leave retro and what to update.

Just got my Steam key for the remastered 1 thru 3.

Tonight we'll see if it's worth playing.

Only first game is available right now, but it looks pretty cool. Just watched the intro but will actually create a party later tonight.

I took the default party for a bit of a stroll. The audio is top notch and the graphic update is well done, the prehistoric interface is a walk down memory lane, and shockingly ponderous by today's standards. BUT it's FUN, old school where's my graph paper fun.

Of course I got it free for Kickstarting Bard's Tale IV, that being said it is well worth the $15 it will cost for all 3 when they get released for general sale.

Played through Bards Tale 3 on my //GS in 90 or 91??    I think those mazes had rotating intersections in some tricky areas, so don't make those maps in ink!  (Probably can find a free quadrille paper app for your tablet.)

Looks like Bard's Tale 4 is out on Steam now. $35, so not "full price".

I'll be interested to read reviews, find out if it's worth getting. Right now there's only one review on Steam.

I would love to check it out but I haven't received my Backer key yet.  They had to farm it out to some third party CrowdOX to distribute keys and its a mess.

Got my Key easy peasy.
 :)

Why does Russell Crowe sing the intro song?

That sure does look like Russell.  I've only played a little bit and I'm not sure how I feel about this one.

I know the feeling...it seems unnecessarily complicated and yet oddly cartoony at the same time.

I'm downloading it now.

The Beta ran at like 8fps but it didn't seem like the quality adjustments actually did anything.. so we'll see if I can get it going.. otherwise may need to buy that second 950.

Yay it runs! Settings on High seem fine and I turned off the AA.

Game looks pretty good but the human character models are XBOX 360 level.. but not a big deal.

I like how the combat retains the turn based aesthetic of the originals.

So what was the conclusion on Bard's Tale IV? Good? Mediocre?

Baldur's Gate III being announced today reminded me of this.
