Favorite toy - Mattel Star Bird
« on: July 31, 2015, 10:55:15 PM »
I remember this one most.  Plastic space ship that came apart to simulate damage and separated to create a battleship.  Cool speeding up and slowing down sounds.

I vaguely remember some kids having that, the closest i had was the "Alpha Probe" (and yes i had to google 'space shuttle toy' to figure out what it was called).

I think during that era everyone was doing their best to rip off Star Wars

Here was my favorite. Another Mattel.
My Star Wars figures rode mighty in the "deluxe Millennium Falcon".
Yeah, we couldn't afford the real MF but I was elated to have this big multi-pieced ship to play with. Didn't even make sounds or light up. Just rigid reliable plastic. Oh the joys of looking at the box hidden under your parent's bed reading the sides in the dark, waiting for the day when you Dan actually PLAY with the toy! Ah Boyhood; love it!

Yup!   Big Trak was the best!

Also loved my large sized Eagle from Space 1999, and Shogun Warriors!

I never knew they made toys from Space 1999, that's cool.

I remember the Big Trak commercials playing non-stop. Always wanted one but they were expensive.

I think they were like $60 at the time or something.
I'm not sure how I was able to manage to get it for Christmas in 1979 I think.

Yes Space 1999 had toys out in the mid 70's.
Somehow I was also able to get my hands on this:

Wish I had it today.

Also loved my large sized Eagle from Space 1999, and Shogun Warriors!

Thanks for the memories! I had three of the oversized Shoguns; Two feet tall with spring loaded weapons that fired hard plastic projectiles ready to take both of your foes eyes out.

Dragun had battle axes that would fling out of one fist & saw blades that ejected from a wrist pack on his other.

Raydeen shot yellow bird/jets out of his chest and could launch his fist.

Mazinga had multiple rockets in his fist and a massive sword.

Ah the truly good ole days!

I had Mazinga and loved that Shogun.  Fired missiles as fingers from hand.
No politically correct nonsense here!   :o

I always wanted Raydeen and Dragun too!

I still have some of my toys as a kid.  This includes my matchbox and hot wheels collection from the late '60s, Motorific Torture Track, slot cars and tracks (haven't set it up in years, doubt it still works), and Chess Challenger (still works).  If only my mother hadn't thrown out my baseball card collection....

The Space 1999 figures were probably before my time by a few years.

I had a small Shogun figure, one of the 3.5in versions.

I remember going over to a family friends house and their kid had a whole room full of the big versions. Seemed like they were 3 feet tall but I was like 6 at the time so its all relative. Kid also had an Atari 5200.. the only one I ever saw somebody actually own when it was a current system.

Lucky little bastard.

Speaking of obscure Japanese toys.. I remember the one Christmas I asked for a Voltron.

Well, i got a Voltron. Voltron 3 (?)

I'm still not entirely clear where/what this came from, obviously it never got integrated into the american cartoon. Probably worth a mint now but was rather disappointing at the time. But it did say 'Voltron' on the box so can't blame the parents on this one.

I had one of those growing up.  Awesome toy!  I had the space station that went with it.  I think it was cardboard of some kind, and you had to tab-A-slot-B it together.

I also had a ton of toys called Aquanauts, or Argonauts, Octonauts, or something along those lines.  Darned if I can remember the name.  Basically they were translucent humanoids with water vehicles.

Alas they are all just memories now.  :)
