Robotron Tourney Thoughts
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:56:03 PM »
Does anyone think a fun Robotron tournament would simply be:

Who can store the most points on first life?

At the recent California Extreme last weekend I played a good bit of Robotron with one of the top 10 world players and enjoyed playing on a Robotron cabaret there as well. Because Robotron can be a marathon game, a quick highest score on first life might actually be a lot of fun and would allow people to have multiple tries and allow more people to play.

From what I've been told, even top players seldom get over 300k on a first life, is this correct?

I believe that's true.  Even if you're great at robotron you probably die at least once before 300k.

I'm going to try to do an arcade tourney at free play this year on 5 of the most popular classics 100% online using the high score saves kits.  Arcade tourneys are really hard to run at FPF just due to the time it takes to do, but i'm thinking if it's all online we can set a timetable on it and let the internet decide who won in a best average of 5.

Anyone that would like to run some kind of contest on the floor please feel free to catch one of us!

Another train of thought: You can set Robotron to have 3 or 5 lives with no extra lives awarded.

My thought is that this would be the way to separate the better players from the average players. If you only give one life, there is too much chance for a random death early in the game. That would likely cause me to play ultra-conservative, which is not conducive to scoring a lot of points. If you know you have 3 or 5 lives to burn, you could play the style you would normally play until you got down to your last life (which would probably force you into a more conservative mode).

This is pretty much how I play Donkey Kong when I am going for high scores, since the number of lives you can earn is finite. My first and second man I am wiling to take more chances on if I think I can increase my points. My third and fourth man are generally played in a far more conservative manner.

maybe have different brackets. like novice, players, and robotron masters if there is enough people.   that could get more people involved because they could compete with people in their own skill rank.  i would play to see the top players play, but i know i could never compete with them.

Yeah, a fixed amount of lives like three or five would work. It may be a more enjoyable tournament for novice players and would allow expert players to play more as they normally would while keeping game lengths short for high turnaround so next person in line doesn't have to wait so long to play.

Tried bringing the cabaret back, but measurements wouldn't fit for carry on :-) I really like the lighting effects on the cabaret version at back of bezel.

I am totally in for a Robo tourney.  Fixed lives sounds good.  I would get about a hundred grand on my first guy, and I would think I was doing pretty good.  I can max out after about 3 million.  I start getting tired, and those f@ck*ng guys are relentless.  They just dont ever give up.  They eventually beat me to submission , as I throw in the towel.  Usually drenched in my own sweat.
