MAME advice
« on: December 28, 2017, 08:14:55 PM »
I've got a client that wants me to make a 4 player multigame out of his gutted cabinet. He wants to play the standard Konami 4 player games.. TMNT, Simpsons, etc.

It just needs to play the 4-player games, we're not going the full 5000 game route.

This will be using an LCD monitor (via client request)

Whats the best / reasonable way to do this? Raspberry Pi and 4x USB encoders?

I know there are some new project boards out there, any better than the pi?

Any problem doing 4x joysticks at once?

Get a second hand PC. Get your LCD and i already have a mame+hyperspin setup for this with 3-4 player games filtered. If you want it, its yours.

Thanks guys but this is going to someone who is not tech saavy, i've got plenty of PCs laying about but I'd prefer to get something more bullet proof and small .. ie the Pi. I appreciate the offers though.

I'm wondering if the Pi can handle 4 encoders or if that's going to cause a problem.

I'll start by saying that I personally don't have experience with this, but I found a few posts online that look like it's possible and they talk a lot about what they did for theirs. I didn't read through all of them, but I assume even though these are essentially pedestal/control panels that can be transferred into a cabinet with no issues.

considering how many endless threads there are on forums with people crying about configuring individual games to run on a pi, I'm not sure I'd consider a pi a "bulletproof" solution.

As for the encoders, just buy an ipac4.

Thanks for the heads up on the Ipac4 .. i didn't know that existed.. been awhile since I bought anything from ultimarc.

Seems like it will work with the Pi as well..

As for the Pi they are fidgety but i've set them up before.

Well if you use a compatible HS frontend like Attract Mode or Z-Spin, i have the roms, movies, wheels and themes sorted if you need them.

I also have a stash of minimus32 if you want to make the same type of encoder that the guy in the BYOAC build log made.

I’m curious too... in my last pi/ipac build I started out using a newer model Dell 16:9 27” LCD to try to get the largest ~4:3 picture I could but it’s honestly a bit underwhelming. Looks great for what it is and I’ve been playing with downscaling the video for a CRT, but it’s been finicky. I may just break down and get another LCD option if you have a better suggestion.

Dude wants an LCD and he's paying.. we'll probably just use whatever fits and stretch it. Blasphemy sure but once again, that's the request.

I've used a widescreen 22" dell in a galaxian multicade build with nice results, and I have a 19"4:3 PLANAR LCD in my stash if I ever have to use that for myself.

you can find 4:3 aspect 19" and 20" LCDs on eBay.
