Bally Star Trek restoration with custom features
« on: December 30, 2017, 08:41:48 PM »
Just finishing a full restoration on a Bally Star Trek. Full cabinet strip and repaint, all playfield inserts replaced (I used starburst transparent except for the 5/8" which I had to use new opaque since transparent is not available), sourced backglass 10 out of 10, LED conversion, legs sandblasted and repainted, new leg levelers, new locks, playfield polished with a few areas touched up, siderails, lockdown bar and coin door were buffed out. Added illuminated flipper buttons, orange under cabinet LED strip lights and blue strip LED lights under the backbox sides. The orange cabinet lights stay on during attract mode but when a game is started, they go out and the blue under backbox lights come on during game play. At game over the blue lights go out and the orange lights come back on.

Only thing left is to add the insert decals once they arrive.

My Bally ST cabinet paint is in remarkable shape but I really need to repaint the backbox.
Please, please share specs on that blue paint! I tried several over the counter paints but nothing comes close.

well i do pretty much only Gottliebs.
for the base pint i use enamel, mached by puter, a gallon will do quite a few games even tho I do three coats of the base. But that is for a base that is white.
For Blue I use Krylon "true blue"
thats a example. I use the krylon sprays for all the art work BESIDES the base. I know one of the other guys on here that does a lot of restorations also uses Krylon for the colors, I think he used krylon for the base also. like I said I use a liquid for the base but thats a matter of choice.
does that help? you can PM me if you wish , the only thing I will say is that to restore a cabinet, sanding it down , repair to the wood and then the paint is a lot of work and I dont suggest you should tackle the job unless you are prepared to spend the time. there are NO shortcuts!
Good luck on your project and as I said, you can pm if you have questions.

Thanks a million!
Will share pics of my baby as soon as I can get that backbox frame painted. I also have a Gold CPR playfield I'll be swapping in the future.
By the way, love that Close Encounter restoration.
Thanks!
