Subwoofer in Arcade games projects
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:01:57 PM »
I'd like to beef up the audio of a few of my arcade games, like for instance Killer Instinct.  What would the best way to power and wire in a subwoofer in something like a banpass box and how to power a small car stereo amp on a typical power outlet?

You can find mini home surround systems that has the power amp inside the subwoofer to run all the channels, mount inside the game, run the wiring to the speakers.  Rock the house.

all depends on the game, and i'm not familiar with the killer instinct sound board setup.

candy cabinets are cake to upgrade. :) pinballs, too.

typically, you tap into a speaker lead, convert that to rca, plug up a small amp (2.1 channel best for arcades), then run left/right to a good pair of car audio coax speakers to replace what is in there stock, and the 3rd to a subwoofer.

doing that, you can use a PC power supply to run the amp, and run everything off the games stock power cord. no external extra wiring.

just remember, that a woofer's magnet can destroy your monitor colors. try to get a shielded subwoofer. good luck.

KI uses a hard drive as well, unless it was replaced with a CF kit.  Last thing you want is an unshielded magnet next to a hard drive.

I'm prepared as I always CF when possible.

that video is close, but you don't need a switchable 12 volt power supply, and you shouldn't use unventilated car audio amps in a closed cabinet (that amp would overheat with a 1/2 hour of use).

those boss amps were damm good flea market amps. good luck finding them nowadays.

nowadays, you buy an amplified home stereo sub, and hack the sub RCA input right into the nintendo cabinet wiring. wire in 1 plug, and you're done...all powered by the game's main power switch.

if you're modifying all the speakers, same idea...get a 2.1 home speaker setup and adapt the plug and audio-in wire.

i did it, pictures below. gutted an altec lansing 2.1 stereo, added 2 diamond audio tweeters, and rehoused the controls. easiest method.
