Degausing issue with centipede
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:01:56 AM »
Have a centipede that Atari Jim did an overhaul on the monitor, flyback caps ect that needs to be degaussed each time I turn it on.  I don't move it, its not near a speaker or magnetic field.  What gives?  Once I degauss it the screen looks great.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Al
Danny,  there's a lot of.... Well badness in the world today. I see it in the court everyday. I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber.... didn't want to do it.... felt I owed it to them.

IS the degausing working on the monitor.
it degauses every time the monitor is first turned on.
its the coil of wires that run the outside perimeter of the tube with the 2 eather yellow or white wires that conct to the chassis.
its operated by a simple circuit using a varistat that when first turned on dumps 120Vdc/ac and then quikly shuts of in 3 to 5 sec's
Thats the typicle BUNG,SNAPY,CRACKY,PUPING sound you here when the monitor is first turned on is the monitor degausing.

put a DMM on the 2 wires that that go to the coil[yellow/white] and turn it on and make sure your geting voltage there
If no voltage you need to fix it.if its geting voltage it may be a bad degausing coil.

good luck

and for those who don't know, if you have the monitor on for 10 minutes, and then shut it off, and turn it back on, it will not put anotuerh 120volts back into the coil, it only does it on a bone cold start.

hence the thermistor (varistor): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor

cold low resistance, warm, high resistance.
